Island talks on defence and security issues

in Nukualofa Senior officials from the New Zealand Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Defence have visited their counterparts in five Pacific Islands countries for informal discussions on defence and security issues. The team explained defence policies set out in the 1983 Defence Review, including the concept and role of the Ready Reaction
Force, the acquisition of new equipment, and the increased emphasis to be given to New Zealand’s maritime surveillance in the region. Mr H. H. Francis, Deputy Secretary of Foreign Affairs, said they found island countries discussing wider political and security issues affecting the region. The welcoming response made it K’ble to see how New md could help the islands. Islands were told the
main purpose of the changes forecast in the Defence Review was to enable New Zealatd to work more effectively both in and around New Zealand and its extended economic zone and to provide assistance readily when needed. Training exercises and exchanges in the defence field were continuing and would not be expanded. The team has visited Fiji, Niue, Western Samoa and is due to visit Rarotonga.
