Island talks on defence and security issues

in Nukualofa Senior officials from the New Zealand Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Defence have visited their counterparts in five Pacific Islands countries for informal discussions on defence and security issues. The team explained defence policies set out in the 1983 Defence Review, including the concept and role of the Ready Reaction

Force, the acquisition of new equipment, and the increased emphasis to be given to New Zealand’s maritime surveillance in the region. Mr H. H. Francis, Deputy Secretary of Foreign Affairs, said they found island countries discussing wider political and security issues affecting the region.
