Mayor appointed manager
David Lean, the Mayor of New Plymouth and a member of the New Plymouth Old Boys Surf Life-saving Club, has been chosen to manage the New Zealand surf live-saving team against Australia next January. The international will be at Mount Maunganui on January 27, and the purpose in making Mr Lean’s appointment so early is to allow him to oversee the training and general administration of the team. New Zealand has not beaten Australia since the resurrection of the Tasman series in 1980. The New Zealand team will have a five-day training camp at Mount Maunganui before the international. The Australian team arrives on January 19. Xt will compete against Auckland at Piha the next day, against a northern region selection at Mount Maunganui on January 23; and in the northern region championships, also at Mount Maunganui, on January 26.
