Decisive victory

PA Timaru The New Zealand representative, Lance Cooper, justified his top seeding with a decisive win in the boys under 19 final at the Slazenger South Island junior squash championships in Timaru yesterday. Cooper, of Mitchell Park, the winner of the North Island title earlier in the month, beat the second seed, Steven Wren, of Sumner, 94, 9-0, 9-5. Both Cooper and Wren were members of the New Zealand team which competed in the world junior championships in Canada last month. Cooper gave a fine exhibition of percentage squash, combining a good length with his speed around the court and keeping his errors to a minimum. The top seed, Sandy Gowland (Nelson), was also successful in the girls under 19 final. Gowland, who has only been playing squash for two years, was too strong for Dianne Hartland of Linwood, winning 9-6, 9-3, 9-5. The Wanganui player, Rodney Bannister, won the boys under 17 title, beating the 13-year-old Glen Wilson in the final. Bannister, the top seed, had been the runner-up in the North Island championships. Erena Sullivan (Invercargill) won the girls under 17 title and her sister, Toko, was successful in the under 15 competition.
