Beck has golf lead
NZPA-Reuter Dublin, Ohio Chip Beck fired a four under par 68 yesterday to take a one-stroke lead over Jack Nicklaus after the third round of the SUSSOO,OOO ($NZ770,000) Memorial tournament at .Nicklaus’ Muirfield Village Golf Club. “I’m excited about being in the lead,” said Beck who has yet to win a P.G.A. event since joining the tour' in 1979. “I’ve waited a long time and now I’ll be facing the greatest player the game has known in the last round." Nicklaus recorded a 71 and was six under par on 210. Andy Bean, who had a
67, and Gary Koch, who carded a 73, were tied for third place at 213. Another stroke back were Payne Stewart and Gil Morgan, while Peter Oosterhuis, of Britain, and Tom Watson were tied at 215 with Mike Sullivan and Peter Jacobsen. Beck had six birdies and two bogeys — the second at the par three sixteenth which cut his lead over Nicklaus to one stroke. Ben Crenshaw, the second round leader, took a triple bogey seven on the tenth hole. He finished the back nine with an eight over par 44 which gave him a 79 for the day and a 217.
