Stayers Cup to Chiamare
NZPA-AAP Sydney Jockey Noel Barker had one of his easiest rides to notch his first cup win on the Tommy Smith-trained Chiamare in the $20,000 STC Stayers’ Cup (3200 m at Rosehill on Saturday. Barker, aged 21, who has just begun to put wins together after a lean patch earlier this year, earned praise from Smith's stable manager, Ernie Smith, for his patient ride on Chiamare. Barker kept Chiamare in fourth place behind the tearaway pacemaker, Vivatus, until going to the lead in the straight and scoring an effortless victory. Chiamare finished three and a half lengths in front of Kirbrook with Heroic Blaze two and a quarter lengths away third. Baker, who was apprenticed to Tommy Smith for five years, came out of his time and spent five months in England from September last year. After limited success there he returned and found it hard to get good rides earlier this year. But Smith has been giving the youngster some good mounts in recent months. Ernie Smith said that Chiamare was off to Brisbane yesterday morning. “He could go straight into the Brisbane Cup or we may give him one run before it,” said Ernie. The $155,000 Brisbane Cup (3200 m will be run at Eagle Farm on June 11 and Chiamare could tackle the $20,000 Eagle Farm Stakes (2200 m on June 9 as a leadup race.
