Shamrock knocked out of Cup

Shamrock’s hopes of an extended Adidas Chatham Cup soccer run ended in disappointing fashion at English Park on Saturday. Having scored early, Shamrock wait down, 3-1, to Nomads United, and finished the match with 10 men. Joe Mullins gave Shamrock an early lead, and Nomads first clear chance to equalise came in the twenty-sixth minute, but Rob Schuyt blocked Richard Whitelaw’s shot from close range. A chain of events then combined to effectively end Shamrock’s chances of matching the young, fast Nomads team. In the thirty-first minute, Steven Fletcher impeded Tim Pearson as the nippy Nomads striker was running into the Shamrock penalty area. Mike Fallen took the penalty kick awarded by the referee, Ken Reid, but Shamrock's goalkeeper, Rod Seal, dived low to his left to save the shot However, Mr Reid ordered that the kick be retaken and Fullen made no mistake at the second attempt Then, four minutes later, Fletcher, who had been cautioned just after the start of the match, was sent off by Mr Reid. Fletcher received his second caution for ungentlemanly conduct after a strong challenge on a Nomads player. After a second yellow card a player is automatically sent . off. Nomads then pressured for the rest of the first half, and Seal did particularly well to get out and block a shot from Allan Carville, who had found a gap in the Shamrock defence. Shamrock began the second half well and came close three times before Nomads went ahead. Schuyt’s hard cross flew across the face of the Nomads goal and beyond the post with

no one bandy enough to get a touch in front of the goal; Mike Howard volleyed over the goal with the Nomads goal-keeper, Rod Renfrew, out of position; and Mike Glubb shot straight at Renfrew, who had a bad game with his handling, at the end of a good move. Nomads finally made use of the extra man 16 minutes into the second half. Glubb lost the ball in the Nomads penalty area, it was booted down the pitch where Carville and Pearson were confronted by the two defenders. Carville slipped the ball into Pearson’s path and the striker finished the move efficiently. The third Nomads goal, with 21 minutes remaining, settled the issue. Pearson did very well to get a good cross over ahead of Tony Steer’s tackle wide on the left, Danny Halligan’s firm header bounced off the underside of the cross-bar and Mr Reid awarded the goal. Even then, Shamrock could have reduced the gap. John van Opzeeland squandered an excellent chance set up by lan Marshall, who had been booked for dissent after the third Nomads goal Whitelaw was also shown the yellow card for ungentlemanly conduct In the final minute, three Shamrock defenders trying to clear the ball managed to put the ball into their own goal, but a Nomads player was caught off-side. Rangers were too strong for Burndale United in the early game at English Park, winning, 5-2. Rnagers led, 3-0, after 33 minutes with goals by Geoff Blackburn, John Boatwood and Eric Reiser. However, Marty Flanagan and Jeff Hawker pulled goals back before the interval to keep Burndale right in the hunt. Two Paul Welford penalties, in the sixty-eighth and seventy-third minutes sealed

the win for Rangers. Cashmere-Wanderers comfortably accounted for High School Old Boys, 54), at Edgar Macintosh Park. Angus Neave and Drew Hendrie scored two goals each, with Paul Harrison adding the other. New Brighton also advanced into the third round proper, but needed penalty kicks to eliminate St AlbamhShirley, on Queen Elizabeth n Park No. 2. Mike Jeffries put SAS. ahead in the opening minute with a long range shot It was not until an hour had gone than Tony Ter Ellen equalised for Brighton. Extra time produced no further goals so the sudden death system of penalty kicks began. Brighton took the first kick and Phil Lawton scored. Murray Harris equalised for S.A.S; Gerald Kemp scored for Brighton, at a second attempt after the first had been saved by the goal-keeper, Steve Timpson; Greg Shaw scored for SAS., making it, 2-2. Again Timpson saved, this time from Jonn Maguire, and again it was ordered to be retaken, with Maguire scoring. Steve England converted his kick, making it 3-3. Lindsay O’Keefe scored for Brighton before Graham Tipper had his kick saved by Brighton's goalkeeper, David van Voorst. Robbie Noster scored the deciding penalty for Brighton, making it winners, 5-3. Noster and Shaw were both cautioned during the match. Woolston W.M.C. is going through a terrible trot in the Hertz League. On Saturday it suffered its third league defeat in four matches when it went down to the improving Western team, 4-1, at Western Park. Woolston has now conceded 10 goals in its last two games, and killed off any prospects of a tilt at the league title. Alan Stroud was the key

figure for Western. After Robbie Larter had given Woolston ‘.p an early lead, bis first goal in - ‘ a season marred by injury, Stroud took over. He brought Western level with a well-struck drive from a free-kick from outside the penalty area. Then another Stroud drive was deflected beyond Woolston’s goal-keeper,. _ Steve Reeves, by Rex Dillon. Western went further ahead when Paul Laffey’s lob over \‘ Reeves bounced off the crossbar for Stroud to knock into the net The only second-half goal was a header by John ( ,J McWilliams from a corner . kick which was flicked on from the near post by Dillon. To add to Woolston’s woes two players, Larter and Neil y Lilley, were also booked by the j referee. ';j, HERTZ LEAGUE
