Two share fastest 10km time
Two New Brighton Harrier Club runners snared fastest time in the Bascik Cartage 10km road race at New Brighton on Saturday. After the toss of a coin, the Canterbury road running champion, Tom Birnie, was given first place and Allan Sinclair second. Both were timed at 30min 445. Birnie and Sinclair were to have competed in the Adidas
City of Christchurch marathon next Saturday, but instead have accepted invitations to compete in a marathon in Australia. A surprise third was Colin Hicks (Toe H), who has not been seen racing for several months, but who is obviously sharp in preparation for the Adidas marathon. Another surprise was that of Shane Watts (St Martins), a junior,
who finished fourth, ahead of several strong runners. Mary Warne (University), somewhat of a specialist road racer in the last season, took fastest time among the women, beating Maria Moran (Otago), Margaret Walker (Christchurch), and Pauline Daly (Otago). About 175 took part in the race for registered runners, while another 200 enjoyed an
associated fun run over the same course. Results:— Men: Birnie and Sinclair 30:44, 1 and 2; Hicks 31:20, 3; Watts 31:21, 4; F. Brookes (Toe H) 31:25, 5; B. Baxter (Christchurch) 31:36, 6; G. McEwen (University) 31:44, 7; J. Hellemans (New Brighton) 31:46, 8. Women: Warne 36:17, 1; Moran 37:22, 2; Walker 37:23, 3; Daly 4.
