Honour for fencer
John Upfold (Victoria), aged 17, will become the youngest fencer to represent New Zealand Universities when he competes at the Australian inter-universities and national open championships in Melbourne in August. Four Canterbury students, Robert Bain, Peter Kell, Jillian Lloyd and a nontravelling reserve, Sylvia Dorna, were chosen. The Hamill brothers, Chris and Richard, from Auckland, were named captain of the sabre and epee
teams, respectively. The team is — Men’s foil, G. McLean (Victoria), J. Upfold (Victoria), P. Kell (Canterbury), R. Bain (Canterbury). Sabre, C. Hamill (Aucldand), Kell, H. Pearce (Auckland). Epee, R. Hamill (Auckland), C. Hamill, Bain, P. Admiraal (Otago). Women’s foil, S. Goddard (Victoria), M. Tollemache (Auckland), J. Lloyd (Canterbury), F. McMillan (Otago). Reserves: men, A. Shaw (Otago); women, S. Doma (Canterbury).
