Belfast leads ‘Press’ Cup
Despite a low mark of 11 on Saturday, Belfast still has a three-point lead in “The Press” Cup best and fairest competition for the first round Trusteebank Cup senior rugby championship. Belfast lost an automatic three sportsmanship points when its lock, Andy Mills, was sent to the sin bin for throwing a punch. The referee, Mr Lex Boag, a country referee in town on trial for a place in the Canterbury top five panel, deducted a further three points, and with one of its lesser playing performances Belfast received only five out of eight for how well it played. The Manst lock, Pat O’Gorman, was the only other player to enter the sin bin, and he, too, was seen by the referee to throw a punch. Linwood, Shirley and Hornby all received perfect marks for sportsmanship, High
