Freedom from hunger
Sir,—Southern Africa and the neighbouring Black States of Transkei, Bophuthatswana, Venda and Caskei have entered a new era of economic cooperation, which crosses all political borders and is aimed at promoting a more equitable regional distribution of Southern Africa’s wealth. The newlyestablished Development Bank of Southern Africa is mobilising technical and financial resources. It has an initial fund of R2OOO million, and an additional Rl5OO million will be provided over the next five years. Areas covered include agriculture, environmental affairs, industry, commerce, tourism, telecommunications, health, welfare, manpower, education, transport and financial relations. A Customs union with Botswana, Lesotho and Swaziland, and trade agreements with Malawi and Zimbabwe provide a ready source of income to these countries. This factual information gives people a truer picture of the position in Southern Africa, than the illinformed claims of my critics. I challenge the disbelievers to go there and check it for themselves.— Yours, etc., BERT WALKER. May 19, 1984.
