Forestry Council

Sir,—The announcement of membership of the reconstituted Forestry Council was at pains to include the affiliations of the appointees. The council’s director, Dr Richardson, now explains that members are appointed in their personal capacities only. It seems unfortunate that it was not thought desirable that the contributions from timber executives, forest owners and foresters should be leavened by others from farmers, Maoris, conservationists and recreationists. These individuals of the wider community vitally affected by expansion of the forestry sector should also be heard. The performance of the new council will certainly be monitored closely, remembering the narrow attitudes expressed by its predecessor. It is a sad indication of priorities that the Forestry Council, as constituted, should be given a statutory recognition denied to the Commission for the Environment.—Yours, etc., ERIC BENNETT. Wellington, May 24, 1984.
