Railway delay

Sir, —On May 14,1 travelled on the Greymouth express. The scheduled departure time was 9.40 a.m., but the train did not depart until 10.15 a.m. I was booked on the Road Services bus, to Westport that connects with the train at Stillwater. However, by Otira the train was approximately one hour late, so the guard told me and the six other passengers booked to travel to Westport, to remain on the train until Greymouth from where we would be transported to Westport by taxis. We were duly driven to Westport in two taxis at an estimated cost for each taxi of $B6, of which the Railways would have to meet the difference between the bus fares. This incident further highlights the ineptness of railways management and staff. One wonders how often this type of incident occurs and just how much money it costs the taxpayers. — Yours, etc., S. W. HANRAHAN. May 24, 1984.
