“Kia ora” greeting

Sir,—Many times when making a toll call, we have been greeted with “Good morning, tolls” or “Good evening, tolls.” These have exactly the same number of syllables as Mrs Povey’s “Kia ora, tolls.” Whether or not any of these greetings are included in the Post Office regulations book seems completely irrelevant and unnecessarily petty. It had appeared that the Government was finally recognising New Zealand as a multi-cultural society, so it is even more distressing to have this come up as an issue now.—Yours, etc., MARJORIE MANTHEI. May 25, 1984.
