Games for ‘Times’
NZPA-AAP London “The Times,” London’s most prestigious newspaper now owned by an Australian, Rupert Murdoch, is about to compete for readers with competitions. Although there has not been any official announcement in “The Times,” the paper’s “serious” rivals were keen to report the development yesterday. They quoted “Times” oficials as confirming that the competitions were being planned but denying they would be an up-market version of newspaper bingo. The “Daily Mirror,” the main rival to "The Sun,” Mr Murdoch’s London tabloid, had earlier forecast that it would be a Bingo competition. The “Daily Telegraph” quoted the director of corporate relations for Mr Murdoch’s News International, Arthur Brittenden, as saying, “We would not introduce Bingo because there is no doubt that would upset a lot of readers and we would not be foolish enough to do that. “The game, which we will be announcing in the next few weeks, has been specially tailored to fit the character of ‘The Times.’ “Prizes will not be of the magnitude of popular papers.”
