Snow foils climb
NZPA-Reuter Katmandu Heavy snow has forced a small team of New Zealanders to abandon for the second time their attempt to climb the world’s third highest mountain, Kangchenjunga, said the Nepalese Tourism Ministry yesterday. Russell Brice and Gary Ball, both alpine guides from Twizel, gave up trying to scale the 8586 m peak on May 14. , Snow had also foiled an earlier summit bid by Messrs Brice, Ball and William King, a Post Office supervisor, of Christchurch. The expedition leader, Mr Nick Banks, also an alpine guide from Twizel, who had to drop out because of illness, said last week that snow had hampered progress all the way as the team climbed the difficult north face without Sherpas or oxygen.
