Jail sentence for burglary

A man earlier convicted of 22 burglaries and two theft charges, involving property worth $9648, was sent to prison for 18 months by Judge Pain in the District Court yesterday. Jeremy Mattave Livisone, aged 29, unemployed (Mr E. Bedo), had admitted the offences which occurred over the last two years. He told the police he committed the offences because he was unable to support his family on the unemployment benefit. The Judge said the magnitude of the offending called for a deterrent sentence, imprisonment for a lengthy period. Mr Bedo said that had it not been for the full and frank disclosure to the police by his client it was unlikely whether a culprit would ever have been apprehended. Livisone committed the bulk of the offences, he said, in order to complement his $75 a week unemployment benefit, There was no likelihood of the defendant being able to make restitution, said Mr Bedo. Of the $9648 worth of property stolen by the defendant, $lOOO worth had been recovered and damage' caused was estimated at $3lO. Compensation of $8338 had been sought from Livisone. The two theft charges involved Livisone stealing $lOBO in cash from Ballantyne and Company, Ltd, and $7OO, the property of the

New Zealand Trotting Conference. DRUG OFFENCE Jurisdiction was declined and a man who admitted manufacturing morphine was convicted and committed to the High Court for sentence on June 7. Trent Dural Cummins, aged 21, a beneficiary (Mr S. C. Barker), is jointly charged with another person of committing the offence on May 23. No police summary of the facts was available. SHOPLIFTING A man who admitted stealing property, valued at $361, from five shops told the police he sold it to obtain money for liquor, said Sergeant G. G. Cleland. Toby Brown, aged 38, unemployed (Mr E. Bedo), was convicted and remanded in custody to June 1 for a probation report and sentence. Property taken by Brown included a leather bag, two wind jackets, a submersible pump, a pair of women's slippers, and a set of pop riveting pliers. The offences occurred between May 22 and 24. DEPOSITIONS Trial by jury was elected by a man facing charges of unlawfully taking two girls from their parents, and enticing a third girl from her mother, and having sexual intercourse with her. Clifford Frederick Ward, aged 39, a sickness beneficiary (Mr K. J. Grave), was remanded in custody to

June 21 for the taking of depositions. Ward is charged with enticing the third girl, aged 14, from her mother in October, 1982, and with having sexual intercourse with her between then and November, last year. The charges relating to the other two girls, both aged 14, are said by the police to have taken place about May 3, this year. An application by Mr Grave for bail for his client was refused by Judge Pain. Bail had been opposed by Sergeant Cleland. DRUG OFFENCES During a search of an address in Kaiapoi the police found 62 cannabis plants in a glasshouse, 12,000 cannabis seeds in a tin, a quantity of dried cannabis material and a set of electronic scales, said Sergeant Cleland. As a result, Alexander Keith Seabourn, aged 24, a painter and paperhanger (Mr G. E. Langham), was convicted on charges of possessing cannabis for sale or supply, and cultivating the drug. Seabourn, who admitted the offences, committed on April 6, was remanded on renewed bail to June 8 for a probation report and sentence. Sergeant Cleland said undried cannabis material found weighed 1100 grams while the dried material weighed 241 grams. The defendant, who was present at the time of the

search, denied selling cannabis. He said he gave it to friends whenever they needed it in return for favours. Seabourn, said Sergeant Cleland, was a first offender.
