Dunedin wool eases

PA Dunedin The market was slightly easier for most lines at yesterday’s Dunedin wool sale, the last for the 1983-84 season. Most of the crossbred fleece, which made up 28 per cent of the offering, was characterised by discolouration, tenderness of the staple, and cotting. The top price for the sale was a binned line of Merino, which made 794 c a kilogram. Compared with the last fine wool sale in Christchurch on May 11, fine wools were generally unchanged. Compared with the last strong wool sale at Napier on May 24, the market for crossbred fleece was to 2.5 per cent cheaper, crossbred second-shear was down 2.5 per cent, short crossbred oddments improved up to 2.5 per cent; fine crossbred lambs’ wool lifted 3.5 per cent, while medium lambs’ wool was generally unchanged. The Wool Board gave limited support to the market by bidding on 14.2 per cent of the catalogue, and buying about 535 bales, 2.4 per cent of the offering. The main competition came from the Continent, Eastern Europe, and New Zealand mills. Prices for Southland wools at the sale eased. The Invercargill catalogue was made up of 24 per cent ewe fleece, 35 per cent secondshear, 15 per cent lambs’ wool, 4.7 per cent cots, and 20 per cent oddments. The adjusted weighted average sale price was 293.78 c a kilogram. Based on this, a Government supplementary payment of 8.9

per cent will apply to all wool sold at the sale and all wool sold privately from midnight, May 24, until midnight, June 7. The market indicator was 294 c.
