Carlton, Burnside seek hockey lead

By tomorrow afternoon, either Carlton or Burnside will have finished at the top of the table at the half-way mark of the Canterbury women’s senior hockey competition. After the week-end’s double round, the New Zealand Permanent Building Society-sponsored competition will take on a new look: the 18 teams which comprise the senior A and senior reserve grades will be divided into three groups of six teams. Carlton, Burnside, Pegasus, Woolston, Selwyn and Harewood, will form the top six to play for the senior A title, but which team will finish the first part of the competition on top is open to question. At present, Carlton has scored 12 points from six

wins, as opposed to Bumside’s nine from four wins and a draw, but the former has a game in hand. Bumside should take an6ther four points from its matches against Sydenham and; Lincoln College, two of the three teams struggling in the senior grade. Even without the services of Judy Phillips, who damaged a hamstring in a' club match last Sunday, Burnside should have too much strength and too many skills for either of its opponents. Carlton, however, will have a tougher task beating Pegasus, which, along with Woolston, has seven points through three wins and a draw. Harewood, which lies in third on eight points, should also win its only match, against Lincoln.
