Olympic runners in marathon fields

Two of Christchurch's Olympic Games representatives, Peter Renner (New Brighton) and Mary O'Connor (University) head the fields for the Adidas City of Christchurch half-marathon on June 3. Renner won the Huntly half-marathon recently in a fast time, while O’Connor is also in good form and should retain her halfmarathon title. As many as 20 men are predicting to run in under lhr lOrnin, while the same number of women are predicting times of under lhr 25inin. The women’s field in the

marathon is weak this year, with the top competitor. Tina Wild (Wellington' predicting a time of 2hr 55min. while Dunedin's Jenny Hughes, who was seventh in the halfmarathon last year, is also aiming for a sub-three hour time. The defending titleholder Margaret Valker (Christchurch), has entered but is predicting a time of only about 3hr this year, compared with her 2:43min,' last year. The races have attracted 957 entrants in the marathon and 1971 m the half-marathon.
