Ngaio Marsh in paperbacks
Two of Dame Ngaio Marsh’s last books have appeared in paperback. “Light Thickens,” a thriller published in 1982, is a harrowing tale of dark deeds, on stage and off, built round a production of Shakespeare’s “Macbeth.” While placed firmly in the great tradition of English detective fiction, “Night Thickens” is also a study of the play and its characters, and of how they can best be realised on stage. (Fontana Collins, 251 pp., 55.50). “Black Beech and Honeydew: An. Autobiography” was written in 1965 and much revised by the author in 1981. It deals especially with Ngaio Marsh’s early years and with her beginnings in the theatre and as a writer of splendid thrillers. She is gentle, discursive, and charming. (Collins/Fontana, 315 pp., illustrations, 58.95).
