Royal Marine remembers
Once a Marine — Always a Marine. By Captain Edward Parsons. Edward Parsons Book, 1984. 205 pp. $11.95 (paperback). This book will have a limited appeal, being largely the reminiscences of an exRoyal Marine about incidents which occurred, and people with whom he was associated in more than 27 years service, “Per Mare Per Terram.” Yet it has something to offer a wider readership, if only an insight into the lives of people who nurtured “oldfashioned” virtues such as integrity, compassion, honesty, courage, chivalry, and fair play. Captain Parsons is an unashamed patriot, as proud of his ancestry as of his New Zealand connections. He repeatedly describes himself as a “loyal British Kiwi.” An apt description. — Jim Donlon.
