Few changes to Chch high school zones

Few changes have been made to zones for Christchurch’s State secondary schools for 1985. The zones, which still have to be approved by the Minister of Education, Mr Wellington, have been announced by the department’s regional superintendent, Dr Colin Knight. The only change affecting parents was in the Hillmorton and Cashmere high school areas, he said, where an adjustment had been made to the north-east corner of the Hillmorton High School zone. This was to ensure that Hillmorton High School would not exceed its pupil capacity, he said. When Hagley High School changed its zone last year to one encompassing the whole city, its former neighbourhood zone had to be divided between Cashmere and Hillmorton. Support for Hagley was unknown at this stage. “We are now in a better position to assess the effect on the two schools,” said Dr Knight. Hagley would continue to draw pupils from all areas of the city, so pupils would have the opportunity of applying to two schools. There were eight “shared zones” where resident pupils had a guaranteed choice between two neighbourhood schools, he said. Dr Knight said parents had a right to make applications for their child to attend an out-of-zone school, although there could be no guarantee of acceptance. “It is hoped that pupils would, in the main, support their neighbourhood school,” he said. It was recognised that parents may wish their child to have entry to another school. Special allowance had been made for the four single-sex schools to have quotas allowing them to draw a reasonable number from most areas of the city. The number of third formers expected to enter the 14 schools for next year was 3935, only 18 more than this year, he said. Beyond 1985 it was expected that third-form rolls would undergo a gradual decline. Applications for third form enrolments had to be lodged by parents by July 31, said Dr Knight. Prospectuses would be issued on July 5 for all schools except Hagley, which would have its prospectus available on June 5. ENROLMENT ZONES Aranui H.S.
