Applications to conduct Formula 1 races

Three new official applications to conduct Formula 1 world championship motor races have been received by the Sporting Commission of the International Automobile Federation. The countries concerned are Australia, Japan and garyWork has already started on construction of Australia’s first Formula 1 circuit at Sandown Park, Melbourne. completion of the new 3.9kilometre circuit is midAugust and it is planned to conduct a “shakedown” meeting on the circuit soon after its completion.

The cost of the work involved has been estimated at $3.5 million, of which $2.9 million is being funded by the Australian Government and $600,000 by the Light Car Club of Australia. The Sandown Park track has been redesigned and will be completely resurfaced with the minimum track width 10 metres and the maximum width 12.5 metres. The circuit will be the first in Australia to full Sporting Commission requirements. The Light Car Club of Australia has already applied to the Sporting Commission to conduct a round of the World Endurance Championship in November, and it hopes to run its first Formula I world championship race in November, 1985.

Plans for the circuit include a two-storeyed pit complex in which will be included suites for sponsors and distinguished guests, and an outdoor entertainment area.
