Terminal full

The recent 22-day go-slow campaign by the Australian Watersider Workers’ Federation has resulted in a congestion of ships at New Zealand container terminals.

The dispute which affected cargo handling at Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane was lifted on May 11 releasing a number of vessels to New Zealand destinations at the same time.

The Lyttelton terminal has not escaped the congestion with eight container vessels scheduled during a six-day period this week. The terminaFs manager, Mr Bill Siddall, said the arrival of the Australian vessels had resulted in the terminal’s busiest week of the year. Mr Siddall said that shipping companies were considering rerouting vessels to avoid congestion. The large number of vessels calling within a short period had not caused problems for the terminal with staff working towards quick turn-around times for each ship, he said.

The 10,802-ton Darwin Trader was the first vessel to wait in line for the terminal’s facilities. It waited a day in port for the New Zealand Star to complete loading of containers for the Middle East service. The vessel sailed for Dunedin yesterday. The Haruna Maru, serving Singapore and the Persian Gulf, is expected to anchor for eight hours today to allow the Southland Star to complete its exchange. The Haruna Maru will take its berth at the terminal at 3 p.m. today. Mr Siddell said that many of the smaller container vessels, such as the Haruna Maru and the Southland Star, can be worked the same day. One of the larger vessels the A.C.T.4 is due to arrive on Sunday and will be at the terminal for about two days. The 24,216-ton vessel serves the European container trade.
