Name suppression refused
Interim suppression of the name of one of two men jointly charged with manufacturing morphine was refused by Judge Frampton in the District Court yester-
Trent Dural Cummins, aged 21. a beneficiary, was remanded in custody, without plea, today.
A duty solicitor, Mr K. J. Grave, had sought interim suppression on the grounds that the defendant's elderly grandparent was ill. In refusing the application. the Judge said that he
wondered if statistics had ever been kept on the number of persons appearing in court, seeking suppression, because of seriously ill parents or relatives. Phillip Stephen Wright, aged 23, an engineer (Mr J. J. Brandts-Giesen), was also remanded in custody, but to May 28. The defendants are jointly charged with committing the offence on May 23. RECEIVED VIDEO A shop manager was fined $4OO after being con-
voted on a charge of receiving a stolen video recorder, valued at $1295.
Glenn William Hunwick, aged 28 (Mrs P. M. Fee), admitted receiving the recorder, the property of Noel Leeming, Ltd, on May 8. Sergeant G. G. Cleland said the recorder was found by the police in the lounge of a flat, occupied by the defendant, when they were visiting him on an unrelated matter. Hunwick told the police he paid $285 for the recorder to a man he did not know.
Sergeant Cleland said the recorder was stolen from the Riccarton Mall branch of Noel Leeming, Ltd, which was burgled on May 6. Mrs Fee said her client, a Erst offender, had nothing to do with the burglary. He had been approached by another person and had succumbed to temptation. DRUG CHARGES No pleas were entered by a farm worker facing charges of cultivating cannabis, possessing the drug for sale or supply, and selling cannabis.
Michael Scott Murray, aged 21 (Miss I. Mitchell) is charged with committing the offences at Waiau between February 1 and April 31. He was remanded on bail of $lOOO to May 30. CONVERSION CHARGES Neville Allan Dawson, aged 17, a stable hand, was remanded on bail to May 31 on three charges of unlawfully taking vehicles to a total value of $48,000. The police say the offences occurred on May 15 and May 16. Dawson did not plead.
