Six New Zealanders have been awarded the Polar Medal by the Queen for their services as members of New Zealand expeditions to Antarctica in recent years. They include Mr J. S. Rankin, a Base engineer, 1976-77, from Kumara, Westland, and Mr J. R. Thomson, a Base engineer in 1977-78, from Temuka, South Canterbury. The others were.— Mr A. J. Dawrant, Invercargill; Dr D. N. B. Skinner, Auckland;
Mr K. H. Weatherall, Dunedin; and Mr M. R. Wing, Auckland. The Polar Medal was instituted in 1904 by King Edward VII. It is conferred on those who have “made a notable contribution to the exploration and/or knowledge of the polar regions and who, in doing so, have undergone the hazards and rigours imposed by the polar environment to life and movement, whether by land, sea or air during a period of not less than 12 months.”
