Seaman charged

PA Invercargill A Timaru seaman elected trial by jury on a charge of unlawful assembly at Timaru, when he appeared before Judge Patterson in the District Court at Invercargill yesterday. Colin Peter Moss, aged 19, was arrested in Bluff on Wednesday night for allegedly being part of an unlawful assembly in Evans Street, Timaru, on May 12. Since the alleged offence, the defendant has been working on a fishing vessel out of Bluff.

Eleven other people arrested in connection with

the incident were remanded to May 28 when they appeared in the District Court at Timaru on Wednesday. The arrests were made after an alleged gatecrashing incident involving 20 to 30 people in Timaru, Sergeant N. D. Cruickshank, for the police, said. Moss was released on $2OOO bail with two sureties for a similar amount, and was remanded to appear in the District Court at Invercargill on June 8 when a date for the taking of depositions in the District Court at Timaru should be available.
