Field N.Z. captain
David Field, of Canterbury, was yesterday appointed captain of the New Zealand XIII which is to meet Queensland at Brisbane on June 5. New Zealand’s rugby league administrators have bypassed the Auckland captain, Ron O’Regan, who is to line out alongside Field at Brisbane. Although it is virtually certain that Mark, Graham (North Sydney) will regain the leadership for the home tests against Britain in July, Field appears to be playing an increasingly important part in New Zealand’s planning for that series. Two overseas-based Kiwis, Fred Ah Kuoi (Hull) and Olsen Filipaina (Bal-
main), will no doubt be considered as test contenders at stand-off half and in the centres. But the Kiwi coach, Graham Lowe, said yesterday that he was most impressed with Field’s performances for South Island this season. “David must be given a good chance of gaining full test status. He displayed all of the things I look for in a first-class stand-off," said Mr Lowe. Mr Lowe is hoping the New Zealand XIII will be at full strength in Brisbane. Hugh McGahan resumed playing as a club replacement on Wednesday night, and Dean Bell and Nick Wright are expected to appear in Auckland club fixtures this week-end.
