Chance for Super Comet to win metric mile
By
J. J. BOYLE
Super Comet has yet to win at 1600 m, but he could achieve the breakthrough at that distance in the Oamaru Jockey Club’s Norwood Handicap tomorrow.
He won up to 1400 m on North Island courses before he was bought for patrons of Bevan Laming's Riccarton stable in February. Besides, he has placed form at 1600 m to boost confidence in his chances of carrying off tomorrow's T.A.B. trifecta race and first leg of the T.A.B. double. Super Comet struck a golden patch of form in the summer racing of his four-year-old career.
The talented Ringtrue had to run 1600 m in 1:35.48 to beat him in the Ellerslie 3000 at the Auckland Cup
meeting that year. Later Super Comet beat Ringtrue over 1400 m then ran the winner to half a head in a class 3 1600 m at Tauranga. Super Comet’s campaign from the Laming stable has yielded a win and a second over the 1200 m course at Rangiora and, more recently, a fourth behind In the Glen over 1600 m at Riecarton last week.
There is no form in any
depth in the line-up against Super Comet tomorrow. King Kaka, in the form he developed at three years, would have given most of
these runners a galloping lesson, but his six-year-old programme has been distinguished mainly by disappointing dull patches separating isolated wins. If King Kaka cannot lift his level of performance substantially over anything he has shown in his last two starts, Rebel Star should be in with a chance to give Riecarton a second placefiller.
Rebel Star’s most recent run over 1600 m was perhaps his best run this time up. It produced a second behind Machiavelli at Riecarton at Easter.
He was a weakening fifth over 1400 m at the Hororata meeting last Saturday, but in conditions that might not be duplicated at Oamaru tomorrow. The Vision lacks the class of her stablemate and close relation. The Dimple, but has contributed towards a distinguished family record with two sprint wins this season.
Like the others she was “streeted” by The Dimple in the weight-for-age Aluminium Smelter Stakes at Invercargill in January but ran out the 1600 m doggedlv enough to remain unchai-

lenged for second. Our Rob. from Riecarton. and Sky Rover from Otago, are two of the top fancies for the Bernina Handicap, second leg of the T.A.B. double and treble. Sky Rover will be the more seasoned of the two after a programme of autumn racing, one distinguished by the number of near misses.
