More sale options in wool auction roster
An expanded list of sale opportunities for wool growers who sell in Christchurch or through Timaru brokers is a feature of the 1984-85 auction roster, released this week. The roster centralises wool selling to one major and one minor centre in each island. Wellington has become the selling centre for Wellington, Auckland and Wanganui wools and Napier will have 19 sale dates. Christchurch will be the valuing and selling centre for Christchurch, Timaru and Invercargill wools from January 16 onwards. After mounting a vigorous defence of its identity as a selling centre, Dunedin has retained 10 full sales during the year and it will have three other combination sales in Christchurch. Christchurch brokers have 15 sales, two of them twoday sales, during the period, August, 1984, to June, 1985. Only 11 Christchurch sales were rostered during the present selling year.
The Wool Auction Sales Committee, which released
the roster, has scheduled the sale of 255,000 bales through Christchurch brokers, compared with the 261,000 bales estimated for this year. Timaru brokers will operate on 14 selling dates next year compared with only eight this year. The range of selling date opportunities for growers from Mid Canterbury to North Otago has been considerably expanded from the beginning of 1985. Timaru brokers have been rostered to sell generally small amounts of wool in combined sales in Christchurch on 10 days from January to June, compared with only four this year. Growers who supply Timaru and Christchurch will have sale opportunities every two weeks during January, February and March. Timaru brokers also have four full or combined sales in Christchurch before Christmas. The Timaru brokers are estimated to offer 147,000 bales compared with 124,000 this year. The acting secretary of the Wool Auction Sales Committee, Mr Steve Newrick, said because 1984-
85 was the first season for operation of centralised selling, further fine tuning of the roster could occur. A total of 1,941,000 bales of wool are expected to be offered for sale in the 198485 season, with 958,000 bales on offer in North Island centres and 983,000 bales in South Island centres.
