Readers respond to Professor Geering

Professor Lloyd Geering’s reply to the question put to him by Garry Arthur on this page last Thursday — “What is a Christian?” — brought a sharp, critical response from “The Press” readers. Almost unanimously they took the opposite view. Where Professor Geering said “Life is . . . all there is,” readers referred him back to the Bible and the words of God, Jesus Christ, and the prophets. Where Professor Geering said that “If asked, I would say I am a Christian ...” most readers could not reconcile that belief with his expressed views on the resurrection and some of the central claims of the New Testament. Where Professor Geering said that he does not believe Jesus Christ was the son of God, it was suggested he was naive, irresponsible, and had members of his own Presbyterian Church dissociate themselves from him. In the letters that follow correspondents are from Christchurch unless otherwise stated. And the correspondence on this subject is now closed.
