The long, long mural
Two Christchurch mural artists, Bianca van Rangelrooy (standing), and Marion Beattie, have a long job ahead of them — 83 metres of corrugated iron that they are painting with flowers. The mural, at Burwood Hospital, is believed to be the longest mural painted in Christchurch.
The artists, employed under a temporary Govern-
ment work scheme, began a month ago on the wall of what hospital staff fondly call the “railway station” because of its appearance. The building houses medical records, stores and the hospital school for enrolled nurse students.
Miss van Rangelrooy, who designed the mural, said the bright flower scenes were already getting a lot of
attention from patients and staff.
Flowers growing in the garden of her own Addington home were the basis of the design, a subject which lent itself to the uneven surface and many windows and doors along the building’s wall. She estimated that the mural would take another five months to complete.
