An historic Birdlings Flat farm was passed in at auction for $165,000 on May 11. A private sale has been arranged The 186 ha <462 acre) Crown renewable lease property had been owned since 1908 by the Price family. It was part of the Kinloch estate subdivided in 1906. The farm included a 2000 sq ft weatherboard homestead built on the lake edge in 1908, farm buildings and yards, and stock of over 900 sheep and some cattle.

The auctioneer was Mr Tim Templeton, of Matson and Allan Real Estate, Ltd. Ail six sections in an Avonhead subdivision offered at auction on May 12 were passed in although the terms, 80 per cent of the purhcase price interest-free for 12 months, were attractive.

Mr John Taylor, of George Anderson Smiths City Market, described the response on the day as disappointing. But he said that the final bids on three sites had been very close to reserve, and that private sales were likely in these cases within the week.

The sections range in size from 500 to 788 sq m. The passing in bids hovered around “the early $30,000," he said. The auctioneer was Mr C. D. Smith and about 60 people attended the sale. A two-bedroom character home at 73 St Albans Street in Merivale was passed in at auction on May 17 for $52,000.

A 6.7 ha farmlet at Templeton was sold at auction on May 11 for $lOO,OOO. The property comprises an early style weatherboard three-bedroom dwelling vacant for some years, a single garage, old stables with lean-to implement bay and a hay barn. It has a GV (1982) of $82,000. The auctioneer, Mr Tom Williams of Pyne, Gould, Guinness, said that vendor finance of $40,000 at 11 per cent helped the sale.
