A problem of disposal

A dead sunfish lying off the foreshore of Charteris Bay yesterday is inspected by Tim Jacometti, aged seven, left and his brother Marc, aged nine. The two boys, and their friend, Ben Hayes, dragged it ashore on Thursday and anchored it to the beach.

They now have the problem of burying the fish which is more than a metre wide and a metre long. This is a normal size for a sunfish, although the species can grow up to four metres long and weigh up to two tonnes. Sunfish are quite often found in the bays off Banks Peninsula. They swim just below the surface of the water and feed on eels and squid. Although sunfish are carnivorous they are harmless to humans.
