O’Rourke ready
PA Auckland The Commonwealth javelin champion, Mike O’Rourke, of Auckland, says he has recovered from a back injury and is confident of qualifying for the Olympic Games. O’Rourke needs a throw of 85m before July 28 to confirm his place in the New Zealand team. Although O’Rourke has not competed seriously since the world track and field championships in Helsinki in August, 4
he said: “I'm under no pressure myself. I know I can do it. I wouldn’t be wasting my time otherwise.” He said he will leave for Los Angeles on July 7 and train at the University of California The decision by most Eastern bloc countries not to take part in the Olympics did not worry him. “That’s good for me, and bad for them. Whoever turns up there will be my competitors.”
