National Olympic appeal to begin next week

A national fund-raising campaign to help prepare New Zealand’s Olympic team for Los Angeles, starts next week.

It is jointly organised by the National Bank and Lion Breweries, Ltd, through more than 500 collection points. New Zealand’s representatives had in the past often arrived at the Games without the advantage of the intensive preparation of other teams. This appeal

was designed to provide the preparation which will allow the athletes to compete on equal terms, said the

sponsors. In spite of the support the team has already obtained, an estimated $400,000 is still needed.

Specially overprinted lodgement slips, bearing the Olympic insignia, will be available to the public in special containers at National Bank branches and agencies.

Special collection tins will be available in all bars at more than 250 Lion hotels and taverns. The appeal will be widely publicised for at least a month. “The Lion, National Bank appeal for funds to help prepare our Olympic team is a magnificent gesture,” said Mr Roy Dutton, chairman of the Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association.
