Generation starts

PA New Plymouth The Patea dam’s working life has begun with power generating from one of the new hydro scheme s three turbines. The first turbine has begun transmitting 10MW of power, about a third of the dam’s final capacity, to the Ministry of Energy s Tawhiti Road substation near Hawera.

From there, the Egmont Electric Power Board contributes to the national grid. A second turbine is expected to be working in about a month and the third about two weeks later, according to the power board's general manager, Mr Athol Davis. The dam will be officially opened in October by the Governor-General, Sir David Beattie. y.
