22 burglaries admitted

An unemployed man who admitted 22 burglaries and two thefts, involving property worth $9648, told police he committed the offences because he was unable to support his family on the benefit, said Sergeant J. E. Dwyer in the District Court yesterday. Jeremy Mattave Livisone, aged 29 (Mr E. Bedo), was convicted and remanded in custody to May 25 for a probation report and sentence.

Sergeant Dwyer said that after midnight on May 11 the defendant broke into a city restaurant. When police arrived he ran off but was caught nearby. Livisone then also admitted a number of burglaries which he had committed in the last two years. The two theft charges involved Livisone stealing $lOBO in cash from Ballantyne and Company Ltd, and $7OO, the property of the New Zealand Trotting Conference. Of the $9648 worth of property stolen by the defendant, $lOOO worth had been recovered and damage was estimated at $3lO.

Compensation of $8338 was sought from the defendant said Sergeant Dwyer.

An application for bail was refused.

INCEST CHARGE Bail was set at $3OOO for a man aged 41. charged with committing incest with a girl, aged 16. early in January. On the application of counsel, Mr P. D. Woolley, the defendant was remanded, without plea, to June 1. Sergeant J. E. Dwyer sought, and obtained interim suppression of the name of the defendant and the town in which the alleged offence is said to have taken place. During the period of the remand the defendant will undergo a psychiatric examination. Bail was set at $lOOO with two sureties of the same amount. TOILET ROBBERY After being beaten and having his head forced into a hotel urinal, a partly disabled man was robbed of $6O, part of a social welfare payment he had received that day, said Sergeant Dwyer. Anthony Paul Curtis, aged 27. a labourer (Miss E. H. B. Thompson), who admitted robbing Grant John Delaney of the money, was convicted and remanded, on bail of $2OOO, to June 1 for a probation report and sentence.

On the night of May 3 the complainant was drinking in a hotel where the defendant was. When the complainant went to the toilet he was followed by Curtis who threw him to the ground and began punching him. said Sergeant Dwyer. Curtis forced the complainant’s head into the water in the urinal, at the same time removing his wallet. The defendant ran off but was caught not far away. Although he denied all knowledge of the offence the $6O was found in his possession, said Sergeant Dwyer. The complainant suffered cuts and bruising as a result of the assault, he said. The application for bail was heard in chambers. THREE MONTHS JAIL Diane Iris Palermo, aged 23, was sent to prison for three months when she appeared for sentence on 70 charges of fraud, involving $BOOO. The Judge told Palermo that were it not for her two children and the one she was now expecting she could have expected to receive a lengthy custodial sentence in view of the sheer number of the offences and the total amount involved.
