Lake hotel sold
A hotel in Glenorchy, a small town at the head of Lake Wakatipu, was sold for $120,000 at an auction in Queenstown yesterday.
The Mount Earnslaw Hotel was bought at the mortgagee’s auction by Mr King Allen, a farmer of Motu, in Southland. The 20-year-old wooden hotel with roughcast frontage contains public and lounge bars, a large dining room and guest
accommodation of seven bedrooms.
About 50 people attended the auction, conducted by Mr Doug Brown of Queenstown Real Estate. He said the hotel’s selling price was above the mortgagee’s estimate of redemption. The hotel was quite run down, but was the sort of place that was quite hard to get as it had potential to be improved greatly, said Mr Brown.
