‘Too early’ to evaluate shows of gas

PA Timaru It was too early to attach commercial significance to shows of gas in the exploration well Clipper 1, said a spokesman for the BP, Shell, Todd consortium yesterday. Clipper 1 is being drilled off the coast of South Canterbury, and has encountered shows of gas in thin sandstone below 4000 m.

The spokesman said proper evaluation of the shows could be made only after the well reached its final depth, when flow tests

would be made if they were considered justified. Results of any tests done after drilling ended would be announced in due course, he said. In the meantime, to avoid unnecessary speculation, the consortium would make no announcements apart from giving the drill depth. On Tuesday, when the well was at 4315 m, a stuck drill pipe halted progress. The pipe was subsequently freed and the well is now drilling at 4323 m. Programmed final depth is 4900 m.
