Good chance for Atkins

The prospects of Dale Atkins vaulting from Canterbury’s rugby ranks into those of the All Blacks improved significantly yesterday when two of the country’s leading No. 8 forwards dropped out of contention for the Australian tour in July-August. Geoff Old (Manawatu), who has been Murray Mexted’s back-up man in the All Blacks for three seasons, announced that he

could not afford the time to tour, although he was not finished with international rugby. Old has played 17 times for New Zealand and 106 games for his province.

In Auckland, the back row specialist, Glenn Rich, a national sevens representative, ruptured an achilles tendon in training with the Suburbs club, and is likely to be out of rugby for three months. Rich had

been chosen to play for North in the inter-island match in Rotorua next Saturday. Atkins started the present season in dashing style for University in the Christchurch senior competition, and his power and drive have already taken him into the New Zealand Universities’ team. Further honours might come his way after his appearance for South Island.
