Catchment surveys to monitor animal population numbers and the vegetation condition were commenced in the Whltcombe River by the Forest Reserach Institute In 1972. Recent remeasurements have shown the possum population to have Increased to a point where significant dam- | age of forest vegetation due to E intensive possum browsing, is E occurlnp. f As possum numbers increase. the effect of their intensive browsing on a wide range of palatable species, Is extremely damaging, generally resulting in severe mortality. Their effect on the two major tree' species, rata and kamahl, both of which are highly palatable, is of concern in catchments where these two species form the predominant forest type. Where subsequent death and collapse of rata/kamahi forest occurs on steep unstable mountain slopes there is risk of greatly accelerated erosion processes. The Whltcombe River as a major tributary of the Hokitika River has some significance tn this context. While private trappers have for many years trapped and poisoned possums for furs In the catchment, their effect has been Insufficient to achieve any permanent reduction in overall possum population numbers. The poisoning operation will involve the sewing by fixed wing aircraft of IJBO poison Impregnated carrot and pollard pellet baits. Balts will be dyed green, to make them unattractive to birds. A recently developed baitcutting and spraying machine will be used to prepare and treat bafts for the operation. The operation will continue as weather permits during June and July to completion.
