Two from south in squash

Paul Viggers, of Canterbury, and Robyn Hadfield, of Blenheim, are the only South Island players named in the national men’s and women’s training squads for the 1985 world squash championships, in Egypt (men) and Ireland (women). The president of the New Zealand Squash Rackets Association, Mr Mike Greig, of Palmerston North, this week released the squads of 10 men and nine women named by the national selectors. Of the teams which represented New Zealand in last

year’s respective world championships, only the veteran Neven Barbour, who was unavailable, is missing. The world No. 10, Ross Norman, is back in a New Zealand world championship squad after missing last year’s event in Auckland because of the injuries he suffered in a parachuting accident in Britain. The players in the squad, with the exception of the full-time players on the international circuit, will be provided with training programmes for the next 18 months. The men’s squad

will be under the charge of Barbour and Rob Crothall while Susie Simcock will look after the women.

The convener of the national selection panel, Mr Shane O’Dwyer, of Wellington, has confirmed that the squads are not necessarily final and players car be added or deleted up until the announcement ot the teams in 1985. The squads, in alphabetical order are.— Men: Craig Blackwood
