Mr Liggett may fight judgment
The secretary of the Canterbury Drivers’ Union, Mr Peter Liggett, may consider appealing against a High Court decision rejecting an application by him and 10 others for a retrial of a damages claim against them.
A total of $52,400 was awarded by a jury to Mr P. M. O’Boyle last December against Mr Liggett and 10 other members and former members of the Drivers’ Union.
Rejecting an application for a retrial, Mr Justice Roper said yesterday that he saw nothing immoderate
in the jury’s award of $6400 punitive damages, and although the general damages award of $46,000 was higher than he would have made, he was not satisfied that the jury had taken an unreasonable view of the evidence.
Mr Liggett said last evening that he had not seen the latest decision and would consult his lawyer on Monday •
Mr O’Boyle said that he was reading the decision. He also said that he was still working as a driver and still a member of the drivers’ union.
