Full load for Holmdale
The Union Steam Ship Company’s vessel Holmdale will take a full load on her last trip to the Chatham Islands before freight rates rise. The 911-ton trader leaves for the islands this morning, a day before the scheduled increase of 35 per cent in freight charges. Her cargo includes the usual items such as oil and petrol supplies, timber and fenceposts, as well as livestock and an 8.9 metre-long fishing boat. The boat will be shipped as deck cargo. One of the ship’s masters, Captain D. Suckling, reported that the Holmdale had been carrying full cargoes to the islands for some time. He said the ship would bring back the first shipment of
crayfish for the new season. Soon after her return, the ship will be dry-docked at Lyttelton for her annual sur-
vey. Captain Suckling said the survey would be fitted in between scheduled sailings to the Chathams. The Holmdale will be in dock for about four days from June 15 and is tentatively booked to sail for the Chathams on June 30. While in dock she will have her hull painted and general repairs done.
