HEATHER DOCKERY
Spokesperson, Nelson R.A.C.E. Collective. May 17, 1984. Sir,—The myth of the Maori minority or the justification of the pakeha majority? John Gould’s recent articles in “The Press” are a justification of white privilege, blaming Maoris for society’s faults. His failure to look beyond a narrow explanation of Maori problems is evident in his statement that their problems are those of poor people everywhere. Why does he think Maoris are poor in the first place? Does he think it is a coincidence that Maoris are much more likely to be disadvantaged in society? Or could there be institutions, such as schools, which have consistently kept Maoris down?, The school system has been tailored only to pakeha needs. That Maoris themselves are establishing kohanga reo indicates the failure of the educational system to meet their needs. Finally, pakehas who seek to explain Maori problems must look at their own role in causing those problems.—Yours,, etc YOLANDA WISEMAN. May 16, 1984.
