Olympic boycott

Sir,—l wonder what would be the consequences of banning from the Olympics any reference to the national identity of the participants? Would this not be a significant step back to the Olympian ideal that I feel appeals to us all? I also wonder if, to face up to reality, the facade of “shamateurism” should be abandoned, recognising that the striving for excellence in any field is a full-time job. I also like the idea of permanent location of the Olympics in Greece. — Yours, etc., STUART NICHOLSON. May 18, 1984.
