New art gallery

Sir,—l support your proposal to investigate the feasibility of converting the Ministry of Works building in Worcester Street into an art gallery. If this proposal should go ahead, I visualise a new use for the Robert McDougall Art Gallery. It should become a fine visitor centre, serving the needs of garden lovers. A horticultural-botanical reading room and a botanical museum could be introduced. In conjunction with the Education Department, the growing demand for horticultural information could be met by setting up displays, and a modern lecture room. The unique and valuable botanical and horticultural library now housed in an out-of-the-way brick building could be made readily available to the public. A separate area could feature the many great attractions to be found in our' notable system of parks throughout the city. This would be a golden opportunity to promote our Botanic Gardens, our parks and our botanical and horticultural heritage. — Yours, etc., J. 0. TAYLOR. May 15, 1984.
