Barley to be loaded

The first export shipment of barley through the Port of Lyttelton in more than a year will be loaded aboard the Pilos this week-end.

The Pilos, due in port this afternoon, will load about 3000 tonnes of North Canterbury barley bound for Singapore. The Lyttelton Harbour Board had hoped that its new grain silo complex at Te Awaparahi Bay would be completed for the shipment, but it will not be commissioned until next week. The board’s marketing manager, Mr Peter Morgan, said the barley would by-pass the new loading facility and would be fed to the ship by hopper. About 1000 tonnes of barley a day was expected to be loaded by this method, although the rate would be determined by the number of waggons working on the wharf, he said. The next barley shipment was tentatively scheduled for next month. Mr Morgan said the board expected about three shipments during the season, which finishes about September. “A shipment of about 5000 tonnes, using the new silos, would be ideal,” he said. “The port has never been a major barley export centre but the board has aspirations that it will become one.” The relocation of the silos from the No. 1 breastwork was the first step towards that goal, Mr Morgan said. “Subject to inducement, we can extend the silos to hold up to 10,000 tonnes of barley.” The two silos presently hold 2150 tonnes.
