China has released its definitive 1983 economic figures which showed 10 per cent growth, a sharply lower trade surplus, and a continuing surge in heavy industry which Peking had tried to curb. The report by the State Statistical Bureau said the 10 per cent growth rate—l per cent better than 1982—fulfilled China’s 1985 target two years ahead of schedule. But it did not deny that problems remained.
